EWAY Bill in GST

What is an E-way Bill?

An E-way Bill (Electronic Way Bill) is a document required for the movement of goods in India. It is an electronically generated document that must be carried by the person in charge of the conveyance (transporter) along with the goods being transported. The E-way Bill contains details such as the type of goods, their quantity, the place of origin, and the destination.

When is an E-way Bill Required?

An E-way Bill is required for the movement of goods when the value of the consignment exceeds a specified threshold and when the transportation is happening beyond a certain distance. As of my last knowledge update in January 2022, the thresholds are as follows:

1. Inter-state Movement: E-way Bill is required if the value of the consignment exceeds Rs. 50,000, irrespective of the distance.

2. Intra-state Movement: The requirement for an E-way Bill for intra-state movement varies between states, and it is usually triggered when the value of the consignment exceeds Rs. 50,000.

It's important to note that the E-way Bill is not required for certain exempted goods and specific categories of transport, such as certain modes of non-motorized conveyance.

How to Generate an E-way Bill:

E-way Bills can be generated online through the official E-way Bill portal (https://ewaybillgst.gov.in/). Here are the general steps to generate an E-way Bill:

1. Log In:

- Log in to the E-way Bill portal using your GSTIN (Goods and Services Tax Identification Number).

2. Navigate to E-way Bill Generation:

- Find the option for E-way Bill generation on the portal.

3. Fill in the Required Details:

- Provide the necessary details such as the GSTIN of the supplier and recipient, invoice or challan number, date, value of goods, HSN code, and transportation details.

4. Generate E-way Bill:

- Once all the required information is entered, click on the "Generate E-way Bill" button.

5. E-way Bill Number:

- The system will generate a unique E-way Bill number, which will be available for download and print.

6. Transporting Goods:

- The generated E-way Bill must be carried by the transporter along with the goods during transit.

It's crucial to ensure that the information provided in the E-way Bill is accurate, as any discrepancies can lead to legal consequences. The E-way Bill system is aimed at ensuring the smooth movement of goods and enabling authorities to track the movement of consignments to prevent tax evasion. Always refer to the latest guidelines and rules on the official E-way Bill portal for the most accurate and up-to-date information.
